Thorsten Hohmann, known as “The Hitman,” was born on July 14, 1979, in Fulda, Germany. Introduced to pool as a child, he began playing seriously at twelve and won his first open adult tournament at sixteen, competing against a field of 128 players. He developed his game at S.G. Johannesberg in Fulda.
His international breakthrough came in 2003, when he won the World 9-Ball Championship in Cardiff, defeating defending champion Earl Strickland in the semifinal and Alex Pagulayan 17–10 in the final. He became the third German to win the title, following Oliver Ortmann and Ralf Souquet.
After establishing his American base in 2004, Hohmann continued collecting major titles. In 2006, he became the inaugural WPA World Straight Pool Champion, defeating Thomas Engert 200–80, and won the IPT North American Open in Las Vegas, earning $350,000.
His success extended across continents and disciplines, including the European 9-Ball Championship, China Open, All Japan Championship and 2011 World Cup of Pool alongside Ralf Souquet. In 2013, he captured his second World 9-Ball Championship in Doha. Straight pool remained central to his career, including four World 14.1 Tournament victories.
Inducted into the BCA Hall of Fame in 2021, Hohmann continued competing internationally. In 2025, he won the International Open Straight Pool Championship in St. Augustine, Florida, more than two decades after his first world title.
A U.S. citizen since 2025, Hohmann serves as House Pro at Amsterdam Billiards in New York City, where he shares decades of competitive experience through individualized instruction. He remains active on the international tournament circuit.
